On Monday, July 10, Turkey agreed to Sweden's accession to NATO. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to send a protocol to the parliament on the country's accession to the Alliance as soon as possible.
This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Twitter. He arranged a trilateral meeting in which Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson took part.
After the talks, the Turkish leader agreed to agree to unblock Sweden's accession to NATO.
Now, after the president has handed over the protocol on Sweden's accession to the Alliance, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey must ratify it. Erdogan has also committed to working with parliament to ensure the document is approved.
According to CNNTurk, Sweden's bid to join NATO is likely to be approved by Turkey's parliament during its fall session.
Sweden, in turn, will actively support Turkey's EU membership process, including the renewal of the customs union and visa liberalization.
"This is a historic step that makes all NATO members stronger and more secure," Stoltenberg wrote.
He noted that at the moment only two countries have not ratified the protocol on Sweden's accession to NATO - Turkey and Hungary. Moreover, Hungary, he said, promised that it would not be the last to do so. NATO Secretary General expressed confidence that "the problem will be solved".
Stoltenberg also said that NATO would create a special mechanism and the position of a special representative for the fight against terrorism.
