The UK recognises the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people

The British Parliament has recognised the Holodomor in Ukraine in the 1930s as genocide. Members of the House of Commons unanimously supported the decision.

This is stated on the website of the British Parliament. According to Conservative MP Pauline Latham, who initiated the meeting, this vote should be a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the war he has unleashed in Ukraine.

"The Soviet Union destroyed millions of Ukrainians by starving them to death and forcibly resettling them, which is reminiscent of today's events in Ukraine. Stalin in the 1930s, like Putin today, wanted to destroy the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian identity," said Latham.

"I hope that today, by voting to recognise the Holodomor as genocide, we will send a clear message to Putin and the world that the British Parliament stands with Ukraine and that we will not tolerate war crimes, past or present," Latham added.

To recap: On May 23, Slovenia recognised the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The country's parliament adopted a declaration.

On May 17, the Senate of France (the upper house of parliament) also recognised the Holodomor of 1932-1933, artificially organised by the Soviet authorities, as genocide of the Ukrainian people. This decision was voted for by 327 senators.

Earlier, the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, said that 26 countries had recognised the Holodomor as genocide, 11 of them over the past year. For many years, Ukraine has been seeking recognition of the famine of the early 1930s as genocide of Ukrainians from the world and Russia.

Moscow, in turn, has always responded that the catastrophic famine at that time allegedly affected not only Ukrainian lands but also large areas of southern Russia and northern Kazakhstan, and was caused by widespread collectivisation and the confiscation of food from peasants for accelerated industrialisation.

- in March 2022, the Icelandic parliament recognised the artificially organised Holodomor of 1932-1933, which killed millions of Ukrainians from starvation, as genocide. The Althingi deputies also clearly identified the perpetrators of this horrific crime: "the totalitarian government in Moscow";

- In March, Belgium also officially recognised the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. The vote took place on Thursday, March 9, and the text received unanimous support - 117 in favour and 0 against.
