The Prime Minister of Estonia called NATO membership the only security guarantee for Ukraine
The only fact that can keep Ukraine safe from Russian aggression in the future is NATO membership. Membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is the most reliable and cheapest security guarantee for Kyiv.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said this before a meeting of the leader of the European Union in Brussels on Friday, June 30, according to Ukrinform. This is how she answered a question about security guarantees for Ukraine, which continues to fight a full-scale Russian invasion.
At the same time, she acknowledged that our country cannot become a member of the bloc while the war is going on. The politician is convinced that partners need to agree on a "clear path" for Ukraine in the Alliance.
The head of the Estonian government believes that EU countries should invest more in their own defense capabilities even now. Kallas said that from 1999 to 2021 EU investments in defense increased by 19.7%, while the U.S. increased them by 65.7%, the aggressor country Russia - by 292% and China - by 595%.
According to her, the EU is not doing enough, and the issue is especially relevant now, when the countries of the Union are transferring weapons to Ukraine for its defense against Russia.
Kallas added that it is necessary to use Russian frozen assets to rebuild Ukraine after the war. The politician believes that the money of Russian oligarchs should be used for this purpose.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, President Zelensy said that at the July summit in Vilnius, Ukraine hopes to receive specific decisions on its further integration into NATO, as well as security guarantees during the preparation for membership in the Alliance. This is not about immediate membership, but only plans for the near future.
