Japanese Foreign Minister Yōko Kamikawa arrives in Ukraine

On January 7, Japanese Foreign Minister Yōko Kamikawa arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. The foreign minister will hold talks with Ukrainian government officials, including Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

This is Kamikawa's first visit to Ukraine since being appointed to the post of minister in September, Kyodo News reports.

During her visit, Kamikawa plans to emphasize the importance of upholding the international legal order based on the rule of law and preventing any attempts to change the status quo by force.

Kamikawa will reaffirm to the Ukrainian side the immutability of Japan's consistent policy of supporting Ukraine even in the difficult conditions of the current international situation.

She will also provide the Ukrainian side with details on the relevant assistance and reveal Japan's plans in this regard.

It is reported that Tokyo will also host a conference on February 19 on Ukraine's recovery from the large-scale destruction caused by Russia's invasion in February 2022.

Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Ukraine in March 2023, and the previous Japanese Foreign Minister, Hayashi Yoshimasa, visited the country in September last year.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, December 6, Japan announced additional assistance to Ukraine in the amount of about $4.5 billion. These funds will be used to restore the state after the invasion of Russian troops.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Japanese government will start granting refugee status to people fleeing military conflicts. The changes will apply, in particular, to Ukrainian citizens. The amended program came into effect on December 1.
