EU should start negotiations on Ukraine's accession by the end of June as the country fulfilled all recommendations - von der Leyen

Ukraine has fulfilled all the recommendations of the European Commission. Therefore, the European Union can now start negotiations on our country's accession to this association.

This may happen by the end of June this year. This was stated by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the opening ceremony of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 in Berlin on June 11.

"Ukraine has fulfilled all the steps we have prescribed and formulated. That is why we believe that the European Union should start accession negotiations by the end of this month... Kharkiv is Europe, Ukraine is Europe and our union is your home. Glory to Ukraine and long live Europe!" she said.

The President of the European Commission added that Ukraine has implemented reforms and democratic transformations, including strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption in the face of the Russian invasion. Von der Leyen called Ukraine's achievements in this regard "impressive".

As reported earlier, Ukraine Recovery Conference kicked off in Berlin on June 11. The event was attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz.

In his speech, the latter called on the world leaders present to fully support the initiative to increase Ukraine's air defense capabilities "with everything you can" because "the best reconstruction is the one that is prevented."

"We will rebuild Ukraine," he assured.
