Zelenskyy-Xi Jinping meeting possible next month – Reuters

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October. The heads of state may hold talks at the opening of the Beijing Defense Forum.

The likelihood of a meeting between Zelenskyy and Xi is evidenced by the improvement in Beijing's diplomatic relations with Kyiv. This was reported by Reuters.

According to former Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Oleksandr Chalyi, a meeting between the leaders of China and Ukraine is now possible, as diplomatic relations between the countries have improved.

"Now all of us in Ukraine are waiting for some contacts, direct contacts between President Zelenskyy and President Xi," the diplomat said.

In turn, Cui Hongjian, director of the European Studies Department at the China Institute of International Studies, said that China is open to dialogue, in particular, it is ready to join the second Peace Summit. Beijing does not want Chinese diplomatic efforts to "go to waste."

China seeks to position itself as a responsible player in international conflicts. In particular, the theme of the Beijing Defense Forum will be "Promoting Peace for a Common Future."

As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Chinese President Xi Jinping held telephone talks on April 26, 2024. During the conversation, the Chinese leader called dialogue the only way to resolve the conflict.

Earlier, Zelenskyy said that President Xi Jinping had promised that he would not transfer weapons to the Russian Federation for the war against Ukraine.
