Why leaves change color in autumn: a simple explanation that few people know

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year when green leaves change color to orange, red, or yellow. Nature creates a variety of landscapes that fascinate and entice with their beauty. Most people wonder why plants change color in the fall.

ABC 10News San Diego took a closer look at this issue. In the summer months, the leaves are green because of chlorophyll, a green pigment that promotes photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process that leads to the assimilation of the sun's energy and ensures the existence of plants and other organisms.

It is sunlight that helps plants maintain their green color. In the fall, the days become shorter and there is not enough sunlight for the photosynthesis process, and as a result, the tree begins to produce less and less chlorophyll.

The biggest factors that affect the color of plants every fall are the length of the night and the weather. Warm, sunny days and cool nights create particularly vivid colors.

Soil moisture also plays a role. Dry conditions can delay fall colors and make them more muted, but sufficient rain throughout the year can lead to brighter colors in the fall.

A wet spring and good summer weather, followed by an autumn filled with sunny days and cool nights, will create the most beautiful landscapes.
