One of the biggest troubles that can happen to you while traveling by plane is losing your luggage. And some airlines make such mistakes more often than others.

A new study by OddsMonkey, cited by the Express, has taken a deeper look at the patterns of baggage loss to identify which airlines are more likely to send your bags to the wrong destination. To study this issue, analysts processed more than 700,000 reviews on Tripadvisor and studied ratings from the Luggage Losers database, which tracks direct sources from more than 18,000 airports and airlines. As a result, 25 airlines were ranked according to the level of mishandled baggage.

Aer Lingus is at the top of the list. It received 14,003 reviews and 3.14% of them mentioned lost luggage. This means that for every 100 reviews, more than three passengers reported problems with suitcases that did not reach their destination.

Kenya Airways also showed poor results. Problems are mentioned in 3.03% of reviews. Air Canada comes next with 2.58%.

Royal Air Morocco and Ethiopian Airlines are also among the top five airlines for mishandled baggage. They have 2.31% and 2.21% of bad reviews, respectively.

However, the study was not limited to the worst performers. On the other hand, low-cost carriers such as Jet2, Ryanair, and Wizz Air showed exceptionally good results: only 0.28%, 0.32%, and 0.50% of reviews mentioned lost luggage.

The British low-cost airline Jet2 was even named the airline with the lowest percentage of baggage complaints, which is an impressive achievement for a low-cost airline.

Interestingly, British Airways, despite its status as one of the world's largest carriers, also made the list of unreliable airlines, collecting 1.21% of lost item reviews with 61,227 comments. While this figure is relatively low compared to some of the other airlines on the list, it still points to a problem that the airline needs to address.

To study the situation with baggage losses, the study also took into account the assessment of the probability of such problems, taking into account the Luggage Losers database. Here, the results were equally revealing.

Frontier Airlines topped the list with the highest probability of losing luggage for one in 22 passengers, followed by Air India and IndiGo. British Airways and Iberia also made the list with a probability of one in 47 and one in 56, respectively. These airlines have a higher probability of mishandling luggage, despite their size and reach in the industry.

But it's not all bad for passengers. On the other hand, airlines such as Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air not only showed the best results on Tripadvisor but also demonstrated the most favorable indicators of the probability of baggage handling. For Wizz Air, the probability of losing things was one chance in 131, and Jet2's performance was even better - only one case in 674.

The overall ranking of the five worst airlines that regularly lose baggage is as follows:

  • Frontier Airlines
  • Air India
  • IndiGo
  • British Airways
  • Iberia

And these are the five best airlines that lose things the least:

  • Jet2
  • Ryanair
  • easyJet
  • Air France
  • Wizz Air
