Dubrovnik is a real pearl of the Adriatic. Majestic squares and massive stone walls create a timeless atmosphere. This is the most popular city in Croatia, and choosing the best time to visit is an important task, because the seasons have a significant impact on the rest. If you want to enjoy the sea and festivals, choose July and August, but during this period the city is crowded with tourists.

And if your goal is a budget trip, then the best time is from November to April. Lonely Planet experts told us what the city offers in different seasons.

July and August – hot summer, festivals and crowds

The summer months are the high tourist season. The temperature often exceeds +35°C, and the sunshine lasts up to 11 hours a day. Many cultural events take place at this time: festivals of classical music, theater, opera, and folk dances. The famous Croatian electronic music festivals are also held nearby.

However, you should be prepared for a large number of tourists. The best time to walk is early in the morning or after 15:00. If you want to be alone, you can go on a boat trip to the Elaphite Islands or go kayaking along the coast.

Spring and fall – comfortable weather and fewer tourists

The transitional seasons – May, June, September, and October – are ideal for those who want to enjoy the city without the hustle and bustle. Temperatures are usually around 25°C and the sea is still suitable for swimming. This is also a great time for outdoor activities: hiking in the mountains, exploring the islands, kayaking and rafting.

In May, the city comes to life after the winter break, but is not as crowded. June brings summer warmth and long sunny days. September is the "velvet season" when the sea is warm and there are fewer tourists. October is the last month for beach vacations, when the city is still active with gastronomic festivals and sporting events.

November – April: the budget option

The winter period in Dubrovnik is suitable for those who want to see a real city without the crowds of tourists. Beach vacations are not possible due to the cool weather, but architecture and museums are accessible without queues. Hotels and restaurants reduce their prices, and the city becomes cozy and calm.

November can still please with mild weather, ideal for walking and visiting museums. December, although cold, brings a festive atmosphere: Christmas markets appear in the squares, the streets are decorated with lights, and local restaurants offer traditional winter dishes such as stuffed peppers and thick bean soup called fajol.

Most tourists avoid Dubrovnik in January, the coldest month of the year. However, in February, the city gradually comes to life with festivals. The feast of St. Vlasije, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, is accompanied by concerts, theater performances, and celebrations. The carnival offers colorful costume parades, wine, street food, and entertainment for children.

Easter traditionally opens the tourist season, and the festivities on the streets are complemented by the taste of pinca sirnica, a fragrant Easter bread.
