In the fall, the soil needs no less care than during the active growing season. Fertilizing during this period contributes to better winter hardiness of plants and lays the foundation for high yields next year.

Autumn fertilization increases the resistance of crops to frost and provides the necessary nutrients. Experts advise choosing different types of fertilizers, depending on the needs of each type of plant.

Types of fertilizers

Fertilizers can be organic, mineral and bacterial. Organic fertilizers, such as compost and manure, saturate the soil with nutrients, improving its structure. Mineral fertilizers include phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen compounds, each of which plays a specific role in plant growth. Bacterial fertilizers help to convert nutrients into a form that is better absorbed by plants.

Phosphorus and potassium, recommended for application in the fall, help to increase the winter hardiness of crops. Phosphorus helps to strengthen the root system and improve nutrient absorption, while potassium increases plant resistance to cold weather. Nitrogen, on the contrary, is advised to be left for the spring, as it is responsible for the active growth of green mass.

Using organic fertilizers, such as compost, allows the soil to retain moisture and increase the amount of beneficial micronutrients. Manure is a great fertilizer option, but it should not be used fresh - it naturally decomposes over the winter, making the nutrients available to plants. Experts recommend spreading the manure evenly over the site when digging.

Mineralization

Mineral fertilizers for the fall, containing phosphorus and potassium, can also be used in their pure form. They are evenly distributed on the soil surface, adhering to the recommended rates. For example, 50 grams of phosphorus and 25 grams of potassium should be applied per square meter to ensure optimal crop nutrition.

Fertilizing trees and shrubs

For fruit trees and shrubs, it is important to apply organic fertilizer for digging in October. The humus is spread into the trunk circle, which helps to retain heat and moisture around the roots. Mineral fertilizers are also important for trees: for example, adult apple and pear trees should be given 200 grams of phosphorus and potassium, while plums and cherries need less.

Autumn fertilization is also useful for berry bushes such as currants and raspberries. Organic fertilizers, such as poultry manure, are suitable for long-term fertilizing due to their high concentration of nutrients. Special mineral mixtures for berry crops are also well suited, especially in liquid form.

To reduce the acidity of the soil, it will be useful to add dolomite flour or lime. These substances improve the structure of the soil and create favorable conditions for the growth of most crops. Ash, which also has a neutralizing effect, is recommended for application every three years.

Different types of fertilizers can be combined in the fall to ensure optimal conditions for the garden. An integrated approach allows you to prepare plants for winter and contributes to a rich harvest next season.
