Having your own garden is a dream for many people. However, along with a cozy place, your own vegetable garden, etc., comes a certain amount of difficulties, the main one being weed control.

These unwanted guests in the garden not only worsen the aesthetic appearance of your plot, but also compete with cultivated plants for moisture and nutrients. Luckily, there is one way to get rid of them even without using chemicals, as described by Homes & Gardens.

To get rid of weeds, you don't have to pull them out of the ground with your hands every week or use chemicals that are harmful to the environment. It is much better to plant plants that inhibit the growth of unwanted plants.

Juniper

Juniper is an evergreen plant. If you're looking for a low-growing evergreen groundcover to suppress weeds, it definitely won't disappoint.

Juniper grows best in sunny locations. In addition, it is quite unpretentious and will grow well despite frosty winters, hot summers and is resistant to constant wind.

Monkey grass

Monkey grass grows well even in dry and shady places. Its dense, narrow leaves not only suppress weeds, but also add decorative effect to the garden.

Although this low-growing perennial may take a year or two to establish itself, once it does, it won't require much attention or special care and can easily tolerate dry periods.

Ground cover roses

Ground cover roses, also called bedding roses, can be very useful for gardeners looking to suppress weeds. They can grow quickly and form a dense cover.

For these plants, it is better to choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. They also need to be fertilized, just like any other rose. Then they are sure to add a splash of color to the garden with their numerous flowers.

Sedge

Sedge is a perennial plant that forms spreading rhizomes that effectively suppress weed growth. It has decorative foliage that can be in various shades of green, yellow or even red.

This plant does well in partially shaded locations. However, it should be planted quite densely to be effective.

Mugo pine

The mugo pine or dwarf pine is characterized by its compactness and density. This low-growing shrub is ideal for cooler yards in northern areas.

When planted in a group, the small, hilly bushes eventually join together to form a cloud-like structure. And the fallen pine needles form a layer of mulch on the soil surface that prevents weeds from germinating. Thus, although these miniature bushes may be slow to grow, they will prove to be very useful over time.

Hellebores

Hellebores are popular shade-tolerant perennials that are famous for their winter and spring blooms. Also, thanks to their large and durable leaves, these plants usually form a dense carpet that can help reduce weeds.

There are many different varieties and types of hellebores that are widely available, so you can find one that suits your needs and preferences.
