The feast of the Holy Great Martyr Euphemia

On September 16, the Orthodox calendar honors the Holy Great Martyr Euphemia. She lived in the third century and was martyred for refusing to worship and sacrifice to the pagan god of war, Ares. According to legend, Euphemia was subjected to severe torture, but several times, thanks to her faith and help from God, she survived.

International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

This global environmental holiday was established by the United Nations and is celebrated annually on September 16 to draw attention to the problem of ozone depletion. It is extremely important for life on Earth, as it protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Georgiy Gongadze Memorial Day

September 16 is also the day of remembrance for Georgiy Gongadze, a Ukrainian journalist and founder of the Ukrainian Pravda newspaper who disappeared in 2000. Later it became known that he was brutally murdered by police officers, and some time later, due to President Kuchma's suspicion of a contract killing, a cassette tape scandal erupted.
