Japanese maples are a real garden decoration. The bright foliage of these exquisite trees changes colors throughout the year, creating stunning visual effects.
OBOZ. UA tells how to care for Japanese maples and when they should be pruned.
February is a key month for caring for Japanese maples
In winter, most plants are dormant, and this is the perfect time to take care of Japanese maples. In particular, February is the last month when you can safely prune without harming the tree.
Later intervention will lead to active sap secretion, which will make healing more difficult and increase the risk of disease.
Important pruning recommendations:
- Only remove dead and damaged branches.
- Avoid cutting into living tissue to avoid harming the tree.
- Do not do the work at temperatures below freezing, as this can lead to frostbite on the cuts.
- Try to minimize interventions so as not to overload the plant. You can always adjust the shape of the crown next season.
