Unrecognizable Rivne 50 years ago: rare photos of the city

The twentieth century for Rivne was a time of dramatic changes, wars, occupations, and revival. The city experienced rapid development, industrialization, and changes in political regimes. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Rivne was a typical city of that time with developed trade, industry, and cultural life.

After World War I, Rivne became part of Poland. The Second World War was a tragedy for Rivne: the city suffered significant destruction, and the occupation led to mass shootings of civilians. After the war, Rivne became part of Ukraine. Rare photos of the city from the middle of the last century have been published online.

The rare photos were published in the 1976 edition of "Mystetstvo" (Art). A characteristic feature of Soviet reconstruction was the massive construction of typical high-rise buildings, which are still dominant in the architectural appearance of many neighborhoods. In the 1970s, the first 14-story building was constructed in Rivne.

The population was growing due to labor migration, among other things. New districts were built, trolleybus traffic was launched in the city, and an international-class airport began to operate.

The 1970s and 1980s were a period of active development and reconstruction in Rivne. Large enterprises were opened: Rivne Flax Mill, "Azot" Chemical Plant, Rivne Gas Discharge Plant, High Voltage Equipment Plant, and Tractor Spare Parts Plant. These enterprises provided jobs for thousands of people and contributed to the development of the city.
