Unknown London: interesting places where there are few tourists, but they are definitely worth a visit
London is the center of the most popular attractions in the UK. Millions of tourists come to see St. Paul's Cathedral, Kensington Palace, and Big Ben. But beyond the popular tourist trails, there is much more to see in all parts of London.
London's neighborhoods are unique and special: from the atmospheric Notting Hill with its colorful houses and lively market to cozy places like Gerne Hill or Richmond, which are more like ideal English villages. Experts told us which places should be included in the must-visit list if you want to see London from a different perspective and learn more about its rich history and culture.
Kyoto Garden, Kensington
Upon entering this tranquil Japanese garden, you might think you are miles away from the bustling city, despite the fact that the park is just a few minutes from Kensington High Street. The gardens were built to celebrate the 1992 London Japan Festival and have since become the perfect place for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of London.
Highgate Cemetery
Another quiet place is Highgate Cemetery, known for its impressive tombs. The cemetery in its original form was opened in 1839, as part of a plan to create seven large cemeteries around London. Victorian traditions led to the creation of a large number of Gothic tombs and buildings. The territory has a large number of trees, shrubs and wild flowers. In the oldest part of the cemetery there is an impressive collection of Victorian mausoleums and tombstones.
Little Venice
Little Venice is a colorful piece of Italy in the center of London, where the Regent's Canal and the Grand Union Canal meet. Brightly colored boats line the banks of the canal. Wandering around this charming neighborhood, you can stop at the many riverside cafes or relax in cozy pubs by the water.
Herne Hill Market
Gerne Hill is one of the most beautiful parts of London, located next to Brockwell Park and its famous Lido. On Sundays, the center comes alive with a bustling market selling everything from fresh seafood and luxury cheese and condiments to clothing and jewelry.
Billingsgate Market
You'll need to get up at the crack of dawn to get the best deals, but Billingsgate Market is well worth it. It is the world's best fresh fish and seafood market. Billingsgate is open from 4 to 8 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and you're likely to chat with some of London's top chefs as you pick out your goods.
Maltby Street Market
Less bustling and touristy than the famous Borough Market, Maltby Street is a foodie haven. Immerse yourself in the bars and restaurants in this thriving neighborhood where visitors sit outside even in the colder months, creating a timeless Parisian atmosphere. It's also one of the best places to try some of London's incredible street food.
Paddington Pool
Paddington Basin is home to some of the most picturesque spots in London where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner by the river. Darcie & May Green is an Australian-style breakfast and cocktail spot decorated in bright colors, while London Shell Co offers fresh seafood and a romantic atmosphere.
Beckenham Place Park
One of the best parks in London is located in the suburb of Beckham. In the center is a beautiful lake where visitors can swim, and nearby a beautiful courtyard sells coffee and breakfast to warm up after a dip in the cold water. It is important to remember that visitors must take an introductory swimming course in the fall and winter months before taking the plunge.
Historic pubs in Mayfair
The pubs of Mayfair are traditional and picturesque, so it's worth wandering around this affluent neighborhood just to admire the architecture. The Audley in the historic Mayfair neighborhood is a classic London pub, but it has a brightly painted ceiling designed by contemporary artist Phyllida Barlow.
Primrose Hill
Climb to the top of Primrose Hill for some of the best views in London. This is an ideal place for a picnic - do not forget to stay until sunset to admire the colorful skyline of the great capital at dusk.
