The tenth full moon of 2024 and the brightest supermoon of the year is the Hunter Moon. An amazing full moon will be visible in the night sky around the world on Thursday, October 17.

The Hunter's Moon is an ancient name for the full moon, referring to the hunting season. However, there are other ancient names for this October beauty, such as the Blood Moon, the Traveling Moon, or the Leafy Moon, CBSNews reports.

Why the Hunter's Moon will be so bright

The upcoming full moon is a supermoon because it will be brighter and larger due to its proximity to the planet.

According to scientists, just like the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the Moon's orbit around the Earth is elliptical, meaning it is oval in shape. This means that the satellite can be located at different distances from the planet.

According to NASA, this distance ranges from about 363,000 to 404,000 kilometers. When the Moon is at close range during a full moon, it becomes a supermoon.

Astronomers emphasize that supermoons occur only three to four times a year because the Moon's proximity to the Earth rarely coincides with monthly full moons.

This week's Hunter's Moon will be the third of four consecutive supermoons, NASA said. It falls on Thursday, October 17, and comes after the Moon reaches its perigee a day earlier. Because of this, this supermoon is expected to be the largest and brightest in 2024.

When and how to observe

According to NASA, the best time to observe the Hunter Moon is when it appears on the eastern horizon just after the Sun sets in the west. To get the best visibility, astronomers advise looking just above the horizon. And you will be able to watch this miracle for several days.
