Ukrainians to have financial aid cut: this European country will toughen conditions for refugees

The Norwegian authorities intend to tighten control over people who have come from Ukraine, including cutting financial assistance to them. The reason for this is the desire to reduce the number of refugees as the country lacks the resources to provide everyone with proper conditions.

The Norwegian government announced the tightening of control measures on January 29. "We must ensure control over the flow of refugees. We must not allow the pressure on municipalities to become so high that support for Ukraine's aid could be called into question," said Emilie Mehl, head of the Norwegian Ministry of Justice.

The new rules will be aimed primarily at reducing financial assistance to Ukrainian refugees. In particular:

• Ukrainians who live in private homes, which are asylum centers, will no longer receive financial payments;
• to receive a one-time financial assistance (currently almost 93,000 kroner, or 8,200 euros), you will need to stay in Norway for at least a year;
• the initial allowance for childless couples will be reduced.

In addition, the Norwegian government wants to tie the provision of certain social benefits and services to Ukrainian refugees to their stay in the country. However, these provisions have not yet been finalized and will be discussed.

It is also proposed to encourage refugees from Ukraine who attend immigration courses in Norway to look for work or at least a part-time job more actively.

Rules for Ukrainian refugees will be rewritten in Poland as well

For its part, Poland will also change the rules for refugees from Ukraine already in 2024.

In their current form, the rules will be in effect only until September. The announced changes after that date include a reduction in child benefits and the revocation of refugee status after leaving Poland even for a short period of time, such as for holidays. According to the Polish government, those who leave the country no longer need temporary protection.
