Ukraine's national team failed to beat Belgium and crashed out of Euro 2024. Video
The Ukrainian national football team drew with Belgium in the third round of the 2024 European Championship. The match at the Stuttgart Arena in Germany ended 0-0.
In a parallel match in Group E, Romania and Slovakia also failed to find a winner (1:1). As a result, Ukraine remained in 4th place and finished the tournament.
Even before the game started, it became known that neither Mykhailo Mudryk nor Viktor Tsygankov would be able to help the team. After losing both key wingbacks, Serhiy Rebrov decided to start the match with a 5-3-2 formation, putting Dovbyk and Yaremchuk at the forefront of the attack.
The game started at a slow pace. Neither team forced things, taking a long time to prepare positional attacks. Ukraine tried to "work" on the left flank, where Mykolenko was playing. The Belgians responded with a shot by Lukaku, whose shot was parried by Trubin.
By the 12th minute, Belgium had seized control of the ball, seriously settling in the Ukrainian half of the field, trying to get their forwards into a striking position with cutting passes.
By the middle of the half, the Stuttgart arena was still playing unhurried positional football. The Belgians were increasingly dominating, aggravating the situation with throws to the flanks of our penalty area. The Ukrainian players were very disciplined in defense, insuring each other.
In the 28th minute, Dovbyk ran away from the opponent, but failed to manage the ball correctly. Artem passed to Sudakov, and he shot very inaccurately.
Sudakov, trying to intercept the ball, received a heavy blow to the leg, but was able to continue the match.
In the next counterattack, Ukraine had a great chance to open the scoring, but Yaremchuk did not shoot from a favorable position and failed to clear Dovbyk.
The second half also began with attacks by Tedesco's men, who wasted a 100 percent opportunity to score. Doku made a through ball, which Lukaku did not have time to catch.
The Belgian national team calmly moved the ball in the center circle, not allowing our compatriots to do anything.
In the 70th minute, Rebrov brought on fresh Stepanenko, Malinowski and Vanat, which revitalized the game a bit. Both teams were not satisfied with a draw, so dangerous moments began to appear on both sides.
The Belgian players responded to Dovbyk's ramming pass with a powerful shot by Yannick Carrasco.
Malinowski could have scored a masterpiece from a corner kick, but goalkeeper Ken Castells managed to get the round ball out of the frame at the last moment.
A few minutes later, Malinowski took a second shot, but hit the defender.
In the last seconds, Sudakov had a great chance to win the match, but failed to make the shot.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, in the 1st round, the Blue and Yellows sensationally and without a chance lost to one of the weakest participants in the Romanian championship in the first match of Group E - 0: 3.
In the second round in Düsseldorf, our team showed character and pulled out a strong-willed victory over Slovakia with a score of 2:1.
