Ukraine on a par with France: where in Europe the best and worst English is spoken
Every year, the level of English proficiency among Ukrainians is rapidly increasing. This is evidenced by the newly adopted laws on the use of a foreign language, the massive opening of specialized schools, and tourists who frequently come to Ukraine and can communicate with young people almost without any problems. But despite these important aspects, Ukraine is ranked 45th among the top countries in terms of English proficiency, on par with Albania and France.
Such data was obtained by the global educational company Education First (EF) in its English Language Proficiency Index, EuroNews.Travel writes. The company analyzed the results of 2.2 million adults who took EF standardized English tests in 2022. Each country could earn a maximum of 800 points. Ukraine received 530, while competing France and Albania scored 531 (43rd place) and 533 (39th place) points, respectively.
The first place was taken by the Netherlands. The country received 647 points, and thanks to this, it holds a legitimate winning position not only in Europe but also in the world. The Netherlands has held this position since 2022.
Although France (43rd), Italy (35th), and Spain (35th) do not have a high level of English proficiency, you will still be understood in the capitals of these countries because the level of knowledge is high.
Among European countries, none has a low level of knowledge. The same cannot be said about the world. The Democratic Republic of Congo, located in the central part of Africa, received only 385 points. It ranks 113th and competes with Tajikistan and Yemen.
In particular, in the rather touristy countries of Turkey (66th) and Azerbaijan (83rd ), the population has a poor understanding of English. In the ranking, they are included in the "low foreign language proficiency" category. Therefore, if you are planning your trip for a long time, we advise you to learn basic words and phrases.
It is worth reminding that almost half of the Ukrainian population does not know English and only 1.1% can speak it fluently. Read more about this here.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote that the Ukrainian language is richer and more powerful than Russian. Our vocabulary reaches more than a million words.
