Ukraine is once again talking about video surveillance in schools after a father beats a teacher in Vinnytsia

The discussion about installing video surveillance cameras in educational institutions has resumed in Ukraine. Educators and parents are discussing the idea after an incident involving the beating of a teacher in a school in Vinnytsia.

On December 23, a poll was launched on the Telegram channel of the NGO "Parents SOS" with the following question: "Do you agree that video surveillance cameras should be installed in every classroom of the school and common areas (except for toilets) as part of security measures?"

As of December 25, 79% of the responses were positive.

According to Osvita.ua, some members of the public believe that video recording of the educational process should help counteract bullying in all its manifestations and concerning all participants in the educational process.

After the incident in Vinnytsia, Education Ombudsman Nadiia Leshchyk said that it was necessary to strengthen security measures in schools and create safe communication between participants in the educational process. According to her, it is also necessary to regulate the issue of access to schools for other people, including parents.

It should be noted that the issue of introducing video recording of the educational process in early 2023 was raised by Iryna Konstankevych, MP, First Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy. The MP noted that this was necessary to counter bullying, protect against false accusations, record theft, and obtain data on incidents between students and teachers.

At the same time, according to a survey conducted on Osvita.ua, after the initiative was launched, only 29% of the nearly 5,000 people who participated in the study supported the introduction of video recording of lessons.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in Vinnytsia, at Lyceum No. 6, the father of one of the students broke the nose of a physical education teacher. The conflict between them allegedly arose because the teacher had insulted the man's daughter.
