Ukraine expands trade routes bypassing Poland: Cabinet of Ministers approves new checkpoint on the border with Hungary

On February 23, amid Polish protests, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to open a new checkpoint, Velyka Palad-Nagy Hodos, on the border with Hungary. The expansion of another checkpoint and the organization of supplies via the Danube are also being prepared.

This was emphasized by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal. "We continue to expand our logistics at other points," he announced, referring to the Polish border blockade.

Only passenger cars will be allowed to cross the new checkpoint. However, this will help reduce the load on other parts of the border that are important for freight traffic.

In addition to the opening of the new checkpoint, the operation of the Luzhanka-Berehshuran checkpoint on the border with Hungary will be expanded. This border crossing is important for both freight and passenger transportation.

"Empty trucks will now be able to use it without weight restrictions. Passenger and freight vehicles with a maximum weight of 7.5 tons will also be able to cross," Shmyhal explained.

In addition, Ukraine is preparing groups of vessels for exporting products via the Danube. These are the so-called barge container ships that can sail to the Danube ports of Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, and the Romanian port of Constanta.

At the same time, Ukraine is still counting on a dialog with Poland. The Cabinet of Ministers is actively preparing proposals to the Polish side to resolve the border blockade, Shmyhal said.

"We are preparing clear steps and proposals. We are planning to hold a pragmatic dialogue with the Polish side and are ready for reasonable compromises," the Prime Minister summarized.

Overall, Ukraine is reaching the pre-war level in terms of exports, Shmyhal said. He reminded that in January, goods worth $3.4 billion were exported, which is almost a 10% increase compared to January 2023. It is also important that 88% of Ukrainian wheat was exported to the EU via the Black Sea.
