Twice as many berries: how to fertilize raspberries in spring

Proper raspberry fertilization is the key to a bountiful harvest and resistance to diseases and pests. In the spring, raspberries recover from the winter period, and for this purpose, they need to receive nutrients that promote the active growth of new shoots and strengthen the root system.
Kobieta Interia experts told us how to choose the best fertilizer for raspberries. Proper spring fertilization will provide plants with all the necessary trace elements and even improve the taste of the fruit.
How to fertilize raspberries in spring
Nitrogen fertilizers support the development of young shoots and leaves. No less important are phosphorus and potassium – the former improves root formation, and the latter affects the quality and quantity of fruits. We must not forget about trace elements such as magnesium, iron, or boron, which are important for the general condition of fruit bushes.
Mineral fertilizers:
- In the spring, universal mineral fertilizers with a high nitrogen content, such as ammonium nitrate, urea, or azofoska, are perfect. Ammonium nitrate contains nitrogen in a form that is quickly absorbed.
- Multicomponent fertilizers are ready-made mixtures that contain phosphorus and potassium to fully meet the needs of plants.
Organic fertilizers:
- Well-composted manure can be used as a source of natural nutrients. It is worth remembering that the manure should be thoroughly rotted.
- Compost is a natural source of minerals and humus that improves soil structure.
- Slurry is a solution that provides plants with essential trace elements.

How to fertilize in spring
First of all, remember the dosage – too much fertilizer can lead to negative consequences, in particular, yellowing of the leaves and weakening of the plants.
Fertilizer should be spread evenly around the plants, avoiding direct contact with the shoots to prevent burns. After spreading the fertilizer, gently mix it with the soil and water it to facilitate the absorption of nutrients.
Watering after fertilizing
Water helps to dissolve the fertilizer and facilitates its absorption by the roots of plants. In addition, weeding should be included in the gardening schedule. Weeds can compete with raspberries for water and nutrients, so they need to be removed regularly.
What can be used to mulch raspberries
Mulching is a simple but extremely effective way to improve raspberry growing conditions. It involves covering the soil around the plants with a layer of organic or inorganic material.
The following are best for mulching raspberries:
- Sawdust and coniferous bark – they help maintain proper moisture levels while limiting weed growth. The bark additionally acidifies the soil, which is beneficial for raspberries, which prefer a pH of 5.5-6.5.
- Straw – works well as a natural mulch, as it improves soil structure and maintains moisture levels.
- Compost gradually releases nutrients, supporting plant development.
- Wood ash is a source of potassium, which improves the taste and size of fruits. It is best to limit the use of ash to small amounts so as not to disturb the pH balance of the soil.
- Basalt flour – contains trace elements necessary for the proper growth and fruiting of raspberries.
- Eggshell is a natural source of calcium that strengthens roots and improves soil structure.
