Every New Year, we traditionally make promises to ourselves and set new goals. They include relationships, careers, and, of course, appearance.

Dermatologist Thivi Maruthappu urges us to add a special item to this list: skin care. The expert told VOGUE about 5 skin health trends for 2024 that you should definitely pay attention to.

Simplify your skincare routine

The most effective skincare routine should be simple but with thoughtful products. "Too often I see people in the clinic who use excessive exfoliation in pursuit of glowing skin," Maruthappu says.

Too many active ingredients, such as hydroxy acids and retinol, can break down the barrier, as well as increase redness and sensitivity at different stages of care.

Add a quality vitamin C product to your skincare routine

"Regardless of skin type, I love vitamin C for its brightening and firming effects," the expert explains. "If you choose the right product, it is a powerful antioxidant and works great under sunscreen.

Pay attention to your diet

After the New Year's holidays, we can all look saggy and tired. "Increase your intake of antioxidants by eating fruits and vegetables: they work in the deeper layers of the skin to protect collagen from UV radiation and the harmful effects of environmental factors such as pollution," the dermatologist said. The darker the color of fruits and vegetables, the more antioxidants they contain.

"Pay attention to your intake of good fats: fatty fish like salmon are a great source of omega-3s and protein, but if you're vegan or vegetarian, cashew nuts and flaxseed oil are good for you," Maruthappu says.

Don't give up on retinoids

Retinoids are powerful active ingredients that fight the first signs of aging, acne, and hyperpigmentation. Sometimes they cause irritation and redness, but the dermatologist urges you not to be afraid of this. "Even if you can't use them every night, using them twice a week will still be beneficial," she explains.

The key is discipline

It's better to stick to a consistent skincare routine rather than changing products all the time. The expert advises cleansing your skin twice a day, "If you use cosmetics, be sure to use micellar water or a cleanser as the first step." It is better to apply vitamin C and sunscreen in the morning, and retinol and moisturizers at night.
