Title-winning Russian rower was refused a boat at the World Championships
German company Empacher refused to provide a boat to Russian rower Alexander Vyazovkin at the World Championships, which took place from September 3 to 10 in Belgrade. The multiple Russian champion trained on these boats in his home country, but Empacher representatives refused to provide the 28-year-old native of Togliatti with a boat at the World Cup at the last minute.
The Russian athletes competed in the tournament in a neutral status, but this did not prevent the Germans from reminding them of the way they are treated in the world.
"The athlete had to compete on the Italian boat Filippi, which has its own characteristics that cannot be adapted to in a short time," TASS quoted Alexey Svirin, president of the Russian Rowing Federation, as saying.
In the end, Vyazovkin took 24th place at the 2023 World Championships.
In 2020, Vyazovkin competed at the Tokyo Olympics, where he took fifth place in singles.
In 2018, Alexander Vyazovkin won the Russian Junior Championship. At the same time, he won the Russian championship in foursomes. In 2020, he won the gold medal at the Russian singles championship. He is the world champion in rowing indoors (2020).
