Three passed away: what is known about The Notebook cast 20 years after the premiere
The cult romantic drama The Notebook was released two decades ago - in 2004. Back then, the film, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, captured the hearts of the audience, and the chemistry between the main actors - Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling - went down in the history of cinema.
The film tells the story of a young girl Allie and a young man Noah who fell in love in the 1940s. Their story is told by an elderly man named Duke, who reads it aloud to a woman in a nursing home. Later, it turns out that the couple are adults Noah, who uses a pseudonym, and Allie, who suffers from dementia.
The Notebook made the main actors famous stars, but some of them, unfortunately, passed away. Read on to find out what the actors of the movie are doing now.
Rachel McAdams as Allie
In 2004, McAdams starred in two big hit movies - The Notebook and Mean Girls. She continued to get prominent roles, including in Dr. Strange movies of the Marvel franchise. In 2024, the celebrity made her Broadway debut in the title role in the play Mary Jane, which earned her a Tony Award nomination.
After filming the drama, McAdams and Gosling began a romance that ended in 2008. Since 2016, Rachel has been married to screenwriter Jamie Linden. The couple has two children.
Ryan Gosling - Noah
Gosling won the Oscar for Best Actor for Half Nelson in 2007, and ten years later was honored in the same category for La La Land. He was also nominated for a 2024 golden statuette for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken in Barbie. Gosling has been in a relationship with actress Eva Mendes since 2011. The couple has daughters Esmeralda and Amada.
James Garner - Duke
The actor began his career in the 1950s and worked with icons from Julie Andrews to Bruce Lee over the decades in Hollywood. He received an Oscar nomination for his role in the 1985 film Murphy's Romance and gained even more popularity after starring in the sitcom 8 Simple Rules. After his role as Duke in The Notebook, he had many roles, but in 2014, 88-year-old Garner passed away. The reason was a heart attack caused by coronary heart disease.
Sam Shepard - Frank
In addition to acting, the Pulitzer Prize-winning actor was a successful screenwriter, writer and director. He was nominated for the 1983 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Shepard died in July 2017 at the age of 73 due to complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
