Thousands of parrots gnaw on cables and scare people in Argentina's Hilario Ascasubi: what biologists say

Argentina city suffers from parrot invasion

The city of Hilario Ascasubi near the eastern Atlantic coast of Argentina is suffering from a parrot infestation. They gnaw on the city's electrical cables, causing power outages, and scare residents with their incessant squawking.

According to biologists, thousands of green-yellow-red birds took shelter in the city due to deforestation in the surrounding hills. The parrots are approaching human settlements to find food and water, Reuters reports.

In the last few years, parrots have begun to fly closer to cities in search of shelter for the fall and winter. According to local residents, sometimes their number is as high as 10 parrots for every 5,000 inhabitants. In the summer, the birds migrate south to the rocks of Patagonia for the breeding season.

"hey bite and damage the cables, water can then get into the wires when it rains and transmission is cut off. These parrots create daily costs and problems for us," says Ramón Alvarez, a local resident.

Residents have tried different methods to scare them away, such as using noise and laser light, but nothing has worked.

"We need to start to restore our natural environments. But until that happens, we have to think of strategies that allow us to live together in the most harmonious way possible in our towns," says biologist Daiana Lera, explaining that a significant part of Argentina's forests has been gradually lost over the years.
