At the end of July, the Ukrainian and international theaters released the film Twisters, a sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister. And the filmmakers can already acknowledge its box office success.

Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters is making a huge splash at the box office, and according to forecasts, the results will be much better than expected. According to Hollywood reporter, the opening weekend box office in North America alone was over $80.5 million.

The record-breaking film, which is being shown in more than 7000 theaters, can easily boast of the best opening of natural disaster films. The total global box office revenue from its release reaches up to $274.4 million.

According to Collider, Twisters has shown remarkable resilience, with a modest drop of 39% in its remaining markets. That's a remarkable feat given the tremendous pressure from Deadpool & Wolverine, but the demand for the film's return to 4DX theaters in particular has boosted its performance. The film's international success was backed by its debut in Japan, where it grossed approximately ¥162.5 million ($1 million) on 797 screens.

Twisters comes 28 years after the first Twister movie, which pioneered the combination of visual and practical effects. It starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton and was directed by Jan de Bont. The original film was a huge box office success, grossing $41 million ($82 million in today's dollars) and ended up with $494.5 million worldwide ($992.08 million today).

The first movie tells the story of a group of scientists trying to defeat the most powerful tornado in decades. The protagonist, Jo (Helen Hunt), has a personal score to settle with tornadoes: the natural event took her father's life when she was a child (on a summer night in 1969). As an adult, she becomes a meteorologist and develops a method for predicting tornadoes. Her marriage to Bill Harding (Bill Paxton), also a scientist, has cracked and they are about to separate. However, they need to complete their research program. Joe and Bill have developed a device called Dorothy, and the goal is to get sucked into the middle of a hurricane. Inside the sinkhole, the device will release special sensors that will transmit readings to scientists.

Although Twisters is considered to be a sequel to the first movie, it has little to do with the plot. That is, if you haven't seen the first movie, go to the theater to see the sequel anyway. Nevertheless, 1969 Twister is still worth watching. It will not only inform you about some of the things in the new movie (for example, the cameo role of "Dorothy"), but will also allow you to discuss a lot on the way home from the cinema. You can also see how far visual effects have come in almost three decades. The effects of the first movie are still impressive, but what they were able to do in this new movie is simply amazing, writes TheWrap.

Lee Isaac Chung's sequel focuses on the daughter of the original film's characters, Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Joe and Bill, who, like her parents, has become a tornado hunter. The girl used to love to watch tornadoes, but now she studies them using computer models, being completely safe. One day, she is invited to join a team of tornado hunters to be one of those who will see a revolutionary new tornado tracking system in action. Social media star Tyler (Glen Powell) is famous for getting as close to the epicenter of the vortex as possible with his team. Reports from such places guarantee him an increase in subscribers and views. The tornado season is in full swing, so adrenaline junkies are on the alert. Kate and Tyler, along with their teams, are waiting for the storm to approach. This time, they will face unprecedentedly destructive manifestations of the elements.

Chung shot Twisters in Oklahoma, in the center of Tornado Alley. And it seems to have played a big role - the movie is making the biggest box office in the regions affected by the dangerous weather phenomenon. People seem to see themselves in the story. Against the backdrop of endless comic books and superhero movies, Twisters offers something closer to everyone. The film evokes emotions by actually addressing primal fears - the main characters confront super-powerful forces of nature that every viewer can easily see in real life unlike the next alien or zombie invasion in the movies that have been released recently. In addition, the main characters of the film are also ordinary people, they do not have superpowers, and therefore the viewer can easily imagine himself in their place. Perhaps this is the secret of success?

The film's critical score on Rotten Tomatoes is a respectable 75 percent, but its audience score is much higher - 92 percent.
