Russia wants to produce A-50 aircraft

Russia intends to resume production of the A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft. The reason for this is the need for them by the Russian army, which has already lost several aircraft in the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by the Russian media with reference to the statement of the head of the Rostec state corporation Sergey Chemezov. According to some reports, before the full-scale invasion, the Russians had nine reconnaissance aircraft: three A-50s and six A-50Us, each costing at least $330 million.

"Of course, this aircraft is needed. Of course, we will produce it. Not only does our army need it, but it is also very good for export," the head of the Russian company said.

Russian journalists noted that in September 2023, the Roselectronics holding and the United Aircraft Corporation, both part of Rostec, handed over one modernized A-50U airborne reconnaissance aircraft to the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Representatives of the corporation claim that after the modification, the aircraft was equipped with new equipment that reduced its weight, as well as increased its range and time in the air during combat missions.

In addition, the Russians boast that, compared to the previous modification, the updated A-50U can allegedly detect new types of aircraft, while simultaneously escorting more targets and guided fighters.

It is noteworthy that since the beginning of the war against Ukraine, the occupiers have lost three AWACS aircraft: in February 2023, Belarusian partisans damaged a Russian A-50 at an airfield in the Minsk region; on January 14, 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine neutralized an A-50 over the Sea of Azov (plus damaged an Il-22); on February 23, our soldiers shot down an enemy's modernized A-50U.

After that, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, called at a meeting of the working group of the military-industrial commission to "provide air defense forces with the most modern means." He even addressed them with the words from Stalin's letter to the directors of Soviet aircraft factories, in which the dictator promised "punishment" for the production of insufficient numbers of Il-2s.
