The United States of America is against officially recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. Washington believes that sanctions and export restrictions are a more effective way to increase pressure on Russia.

This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller at a briefing on Monday, June 24. According to him, the United States believes that tighter export restrictions are much more effective.

"We continue to believe that there are more effective ways to hold Russia accountable for its actions than designating it a state sponsor of terrorism," Miller said.

The representative of the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs explained that such a status would entail a number of negative consequences, including humanitarian ones.

"That's why we continue to pursue them through sanctions against Russian officials, sanctions against Russian companies, export controls that weaken the Russian military machine, and we will continue to do so," he said.

As a reminder, the US Senate submitted a bill the day before that would recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism after the signing of the partnership agreement between Russia and the DPRK. The senators believe that the growth of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang should be a decisive factor in making this decision.

As a reminder, back in May 2023, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken first suggested that Russia could be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism. This would have led to Moscow's international isolation and forced the United States to impose additional restrictions on countries that cooperate with the Kremlin.

However, the White House has rejected demands to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. They said that this would tie the hands of the United States in its cooperation with Russia and block all efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the EU has introduced the 14th package against Russia because of its aggression against Ukraine. The new restrictions, in particular, will apply to the re-export of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the circumvention of sanctions that are already in place.
