"The worst-case scenario": a force majeure occurred at the Biathlon World Cup

The start of the seventh stage of the Biathlon World Cup, hosted by Norway's Holmenkollen, will not take place as scheduled. The competition was supposed to start on the last day of winter with the women's individual 15-kilometer race, but the organizers were forced to make adjustments to the calendar.

This was reported by the website of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). "Due to the bad weather conditions in Oslo-Holmenkollen, the schedule of the BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup has been changed. Today's women's individual competitions have been postponed to Friday, March 1, 2024," the statement said.

The IBU also shared photos depicting the current conditions at the stadium. The images reveal dense fog, greatly reducing visibility in the arena.

World Cup Director Borut Nunar stressed that the organizers opted to mitigate risk by canceling the start of the stage on February 29. "The concern was that we might initiate the race, only to have to halt it midway, which would be the worst-case scenario. Considering that the weather forecast for tomorrow is somewhat improved, we concluded that it wasn't worth taking the risk," the official remarked.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Ukrainian biathlete Oleksandra Merkushyna won gold at the World Youth Championships, bringing the country the first award of the competition.
