The Six Triple Eight is a story about the courage, resilience and important contribution of African American women to the victory. OBOZ.UA tells why you should watch the new movie on Netflix.

What is the movie "The Six Triple Eight" about?

Many people are unaware of the existence of the 6888th Battalion, although these women did extremely important work. The film also raises important issues of racial discrimination and the fight for equal rights.

It is the height of the Second World War. A number of problems arose at the front, including the suspension of postal services and the delivery of letters. Warehouses were overflowing with letters that never reached their recipients. Soldiers lost contact with their families, and the absence of letters became a symbol of their alienation from civilian life and home.

Thus, a special unit was created - the 6888th Battalion of the Women's Army Corps. Battalion 6888 consisted exclusively of black women. Their task was to cope with the enormous amount of unsorted mail that had accumulated over several years of war. These women worked in incredibly difficult conditions, but thanks to their hard work and dedication, they managed to sort millions of letters and return them to their recipients.

Battalion 6888 - historical background

  • The battalion consisted of 855 women. The unit was headed by Major Charity Adams Earley.
  • The 6888th Battalion was the only black unit of the U.S. Army Women's Corps sent overseas during World War II.
  • The battalion consisted of five companies: Headquarters, Company A, Company B, Company C, and Company D. Most of the women worked as postal clerks, but there were also cooks, mechanics, and other support positions.
  • Many letters and parcels had only the name of the recipient, or a common name or call sign. It is estimated that Battalion 6888 had 17 million documents to send out of the backlog.
  • The women of the 6888th worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in three shifts. Each shift processed approximately 65,000 pieces of mail.
