The Russian won the World Championships, but he was disqualified twice, giving the gold medal to an ex-Kazakhstan. Video
Russian canoeist Zakhar Petrov has lost the gold medal at the World Canoeing Championships, which are taking place from August 23-25, 2024 in Samarkand (Uzbekistan). During the 500-meter race, the Russian flipped over and crossed the finish line underwater.
Initially, Petrov's result was not counted in the final protocol, and he was listed as a non-finisher.
The Russian team then filed a protest, which was upheld. The 22-year-old from Ryazan was returned to first place with a score of 1.47.293.
After some time, the Russian rower was disqualified again and finally. His "gold" was given to 27-year-old Moldovan representative Serhiy Tarnovsky, who was born in Lviv and represented Ukraine until 2014.
As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, Olympic medalist Liudmyla Luzan won gold at this year's World Championships in Samarkand. The Ukrainian became the 2024 world champion in the 500-meter single canoe.
