On the evening of October 10, the sky above the Earth was lit up with colorful lights. The aurora borealis, also known as the northern and southern lights or simply the aurora, was observed on different continents – in Europe, Asia, America, Australia...

Forecasters at the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) warned the day before that powerful solar flares were accompanied by the release of a coronal mass directed toward the Earth. The aurora borealis appeared as a result of the geomagnetic storm, the NewYorkTimes reports.

Aurora covers the US with strange lights

On social media, US residents report seeing the aurora in southern Washington and Kentucky, New York, and other states. Thanks to clear skies and extremely powerful aurora lights, even residents of large cities saw bright flashes.

"I'm just amazed that it took me my whole life to see this. And on my balcony in New York City!" said Dr. Gabriela Aguilar, 37, a doctor in her own right.

At the center of the National Weather Service station in Upton, New York, on Long Island, meteorologist Bill Goodman said he was able to capture a great photo right above the station. "We got a good image of it on our Doppler radar. We were lucky because we had clear skies all over New York City," the researcher said.

Princeton University public relations professor Udi Ofer observed the pink and purple streaks in his yard with his 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. "I think the most interesting thing was the streaks of light, which I just didn't expect to see. They were magical," said the 49-year-old scientist.

"Watching the Northern Lights in Alabama," Ukrainian Anna Prykhodko wrote on Facebook.

Canada and its aurora

Ukrainian Yuria Rakhat, who lives in Canada, shared her photos of the aurora on Facebook. "I've been living in Canada for three years, and I still haven't taken a photo against the backdrop of the northern lights," the woman admitted.

Another Ukrainian woman, Iryna Suliatytska, is also in Canada right now, and she also shares her photos of the colorful show. "The real magic of nature reminds us how incredible and full of miracles our world is. This spectacle is breathtaking and makes you stop for a moment to feel harmony with the universe. A radiance that echoes in our souls," Iryna shared her impressions.

Amazing lights illuminated the sky of Australia

The storm has reached the level of a G4 geomagnetic storm, which has not been seen over the Australian sky since 2004, writes DailyMail. Therefore, the aurora borealis has not been seen here for a long time.

From Christchurch to Queenstown, people shared images of stunning pink, purple, and green beams of light dancing across the night sky.

However, residents of Sydney and Canberran missed the celestial show due to dark clouds and rain that covered the view.

Aurora in Britain

The aurora was visible as far south as London, Kent, and East Anglia, The Guardian reports.

Further north in Lancaster, Professor Jim Wilde, who researches the aurora borealis and space weather at Lancaster University, said he saw the northern lights right from his garden.

"Over the years, I have been to the Arctic Circle several times to measure the aurora borealis, but it is really special to see the northern lights from my garden with my whole family," the 49-year-old professor emphasized.

China is shrouded in lights

Incredible photos of the aurora borealis are sent by the people of China. The light show looks especially fantastic over the mystical Great Wall.

Eyewitnesses of the aurora say that the light show in the sky lasted about 15 minutes.
