The plane had engine problems: in 1976, Osokorky turned into an "airfield" in Kyiv. Details and photos
Back in 1976, when Osokorky in Kyiv was still a sparsely populated swampy area, a plane crash almost happened here on June 2. A Yak-40 airplane on a domestic flight was forced to make an emergency landing due to engine problems.
The photos and story were published on the Telegram channel of the Kyiv Historical community. Fortunately, no one was killed.
"On June 2, 1976, a Yak-40 aircraft belonging to Aeroflot crash-landed in the Osokorky residential area of Kyiv. The plane was on a domestic flight, but due to engine problems, the pilots were forced to make an emergency landing," the statement said.
As noted in the community, the jetliner landed in a swampy area near the Osokorky residential area. The area was sparsely populated at the time, so there were no civilian casualties.
"The plane was gliding down very quietly because its engines were off. People who were watching were expecting an explosion, but instead, they saw a fountain of spray. They couldn't believe their eyes: the whole plane was standing in the middle of the swamp, near Kolektorna Street. Fifteen minutes later, police officers who had arrived at the scene were running toward it, knee-deep in water," witnesses said.
The crew and passengers survived, and the plane sustained only minor damage. This incident is mentioned in several Soviet sources, but full reports on the investigation of aviation incidents often remained classified in the USSR.
As OBOZ.UA reported, in the 50s and 60s of the twentieth century, Kyiv used to build shallow and small outdoor summer pools in different districts. In summer, it was a place of concentration for children, where they enjoyed spending a lot of time.
