The perfect choice: which used cars have the best engines
The era of internal combustion engines is said to be coming to an end. Nevertheless, experts are convinced that traditional cars will remain with us for a long time, particularly in the secondary market.
The British publication Autocar has revealed which used cars have the best and most reliable engines. Here are the top ten.
Volkswagen Passat W8
To the untrained eye, this model may look like just another Passat. However, under its hood is a truly unique engine: A 4.0-liter W8 with 275 hp. The production of this powerplant lasted only four years, and the Passat was the only one to receive it.
Alfa Romeo GTV
The GTV is remembered by car enthusiasts for its engines, which helped Alfa Romeo win the Car of the Year and Best Sports Car awards in 1995. Initially, this coupe was offered with a 2.0-liter Twin Spark engine with 155 horsepower, followed by a powerful 3.0-liter Busso V6 with 220 horsepower.
BMW i8
The 2014 i8 was the world's first mass-market hybrid sports car to combine a 228 hp 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a 141 hp electric motor. But it's not just about reducing costs. Acceleration to 100 km/h for the i8 takes only 4.4 seconds.
BMW M3 (E46)
Even used, this model remains the perfect choice for highway cruising, shopping, or running errands. Its 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine produces 338 horsepower, which allows the M3 to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. And this is the power of a Porsche 911.
Aston Martin DB9
The DB9's interior may seem rather outdated now, but the 5.9-liter V12 under its hood hasn't lost its relevance. Experts advise choosing a model with a manual transmission rather than an automatic one. But keep in mind that Aston Martin maintenance will cost you a pretty penny.
Vauxhall Monaro VXR
Equipped with a noisy 328 hp Chevrolet V8 engine, this model was wildly popular when it first hit the market. Nowadays, the prices for this beast are relatively moderate, but it will not be easy to find such a car.
Ford Fiesta ST
It may not be a powerful V8, but Ford's turbocharged 1.6-liter Ecoboost is a fantastic little engine in its own right. It was designed to compete more effectively with larger units, and it certainly succeeded.
Maserati Granturismo
With its Pininfarina design and 4.7-liter V8 made at the Ferrari factory, the Maserati Granturismo looks as good as it drives. This large coupe produces 433 hp, which enables acceleration to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 295 km/h. In 2009, a fully automatic transmission was added to the model.
Fiat 500 Twinair
In 2010, Fiat gave its cute Twinair city car a tiny two-cylinder turbo engine. This offer promised fuel economy of 3.4 liters per 100 kilometers. Despite the fact that the model has only 82 hp under the hood and accelerates to 100 km/h in 11 seconds, it is very comfortable in the city.
Mazda RX-8
The RX-8 was a very powerful sports coupe powered by a 1.3-liter rotary engine. In fact, it was the last Mazda to offer this high-speed engine type. Its power may seem small, but it weighs little and at the same time has 231 hp, so the RX-8 can accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, and its top speed is 235 km/h.
