Kyiv in the early 1900s

Old photographs remain perhaps the only way to see what Kyiv looked like in the early 19th century. Many locations that are now popular with residents and visitors of the capital looked very different then.

The archival photos were published in the Native Kyivan Club community on Facebook. Unfortunately, the city has changed a lot over the years.

"Mysterious 1900s. Can you name all the places in the photos?" the post reads.

The published photos show, among other things, the center of the Ukrainian capital, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Podil, European Square, and other locations.

Before the Internet, the only way to get the information you needed was through so-called "information bureaus." Thanks to the network of these establishments, which numbered 34 in different districts of Kyiv, residents of the capital, among other things, found the addresses of friends and businesses.

Boryspil International Airport received its first flight back in 1959. In 1968, newsreel filmmakers captured two minutes of everyday life at Kyiv's main air gate.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in the late 1970s, two futuristic gas stations were built in Kyiv by the Japanese company Tatsuno. To refuel their cars, drivers drove up to the pump, and a special hose came down to them from above.
