The legendary "Japanese" gas stations in Kyiv in the 1980s were shown online. Archival photos

In the late 1970s, two futuristic gas stations were built in Kyiv, designed by the Japanese company Tatsuno. To refuel their cars, drivers drove up to the pump and a special hose came down to them from above.

The old photos were published in the community "Group 1900-1999. Kyiv" community on Facebook. One of the stations has even survived to this day.

"Photo from 1980. 53 Brovarsky Avenue and 68 Kharkivske Highway. Two futuristic gas stations designed by the Japanese company Tatsuno (Ukrnaftozbut). Built in 1977-78," the post says.

These gas stations were called "Japanese" because many gas stations in Japan are indeed arranged in this way. In our country, for some reason, it was believed that these unusual facilities were built for the 1980 Olympic Games (the capital of Ukraine was one of the Olympic cities at the time), although in fact they had been operating since 1977.

Before the Internet, the only way to get the information you needed was through so-called "information bureaus." Thanks to the network of these establishments, which numbered 34 in different districts of Kyiv, residents of the capital, in particular, found the addresses of friends and businesses.

As OBOZ.UA reported, Boryspil International Airport received its first flight back in 1959. In 1968, newsreel filmmakers captured two minutes of everyday life at Kyiv's main air gate.
