The movie "The Werewolves" became the leader of Ukrainian Netflix: what is known about the novelty

Every year, on the eve of Halloween, stories about scary and fantastic creatures become especially popular. It happened this time too – the fantasy movie "The Werewolves" took the first place in the rating of films on Netflix in Ukraine.

The family movie was released on Netflix on October 23. The story is based on the board card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, created by the Frenchmen Philippe de Pallier and Hervé Marley. At its core, it resembles the Mafia. This is the game the main characters of The Werewolves decide to play.

The protagonist finds a box with the game in the attic of his grandfather's house and decides to gather the whole family at the table. But, of course, everyone else has their own plans: the granddaughters want to eat and chat on social media, the grandson is worried about his hair, their mother is thinking about work, and the grandfather is suffering from dementia. Suddenly, this not-so-cohesive group finds itself in the same place, but in the 15th century. And they will have to play the game of searching for werewolves in disguise for real if they want to return home. At the same time, they will have to somehow fit into the rules of medieval society. That is, the heroes will definitely face a lot of awkward situations.

Like the game itself, The Werewolves is of French origin. It was directed by François Husan, known for his script work on the Lupin series. He developed the story together with Céleste Balin and Hervé Marley. The film's cast is headed by the star Jean Reno and includes Franсk Dubosc, Suzanne Clement, Lisa Do Couto Teixeira, Raphaël Romand, Alizée Coney, Gregory Fitoussi, Jonathan Lambert and Bruno Gouery.

Critics call "The Werewolves" a secondary "Jumanji" and criticize it for a weak plot that doesn't work well with the adventure component of the game. And the direction is characterized as mediocre and lazy.

Nevertheless, many reviews note the excellent on-screen chemistry between the actors and a good twist at the end of the story. In addition, critics often like the French charm of this family comedy. So if you don't expect too much from the movie, they say, you can enjoy it.

And this is evidenced by the movie's views on Netflix. "The Wolfman" ranks first in terms of feature films viewed by Ukrainian viewers.
