The most popular tourist destinations in Europe are named
European tourist destinations remain attractive to vacationers, but some of them are experiencing excessive pressure due to the large number of tourists. Although Spain continues to hold the position of the most visited country, Greece topped the list of the most overcrowded destinations.
The Canary and Balearic Islands remain particularly popular, dominating the number of nights spent by foreign tourists. Despite this, locals are increasingly opposed to mass tourism, demanding restrictions, Express reports.
Spain owes its tourism success to regions such as Mallorca, where foreign tourists spent more than 47 million nights in 2023. Tenerife, which took second place, received almost 30 million tourist overnights. Visitors are also actively choosing Barcelona, which is equal in popularity to Tenerife.
However, overcrowding is becoming a problem for many places, especially in Greece. Zakynthos, known for its beautiful beaches, has become a leader in terms of the number of tourists per thousand inhabitants. Other Greek islands such as Corfu and Kalymnos are also under heavy pressure due to mass tourism.
In addition to Greece, the list of the most crowded tourist regions includes the Croatian peninsula of Istria and Italy's Bolzano, popular with those heading to the Dolomites. Istria and Zakynthos topped the list in terms of the number of tourist arrivals.
Spain, which leads in terms of the number of visitors, has also faced protests from local residents. The Canary Islands recently saw massive protests against excessive tourism. Residents complain about housing problems and the depletion of natural resources such as water.
