In the fourth season of the popular Netflix series "Emily in Paris," viewers are finally treated to what should be a fashionable climax to the show - a ball. And, of course, for Lily Collins, who plays the main character Emily Cooper, a completely unusual costume was designed.

The heroine arrives at the social event in a striped hybrid of jumpsuit and dress, as well as a cape and a wide-brimmed hat. According to Vogue, the creative director of the French fashion house Nina Ricci Harris Reed was responsible for the design of the image. He drew inspiration for it from the legendary black-and-white ball by American writer Truman Capote.

Capote, while gathering material for his next novel, decided to hold a large-scale social event in New York City in 1966. And came up with the concept of a black and white ball. All guests were to arrive in black and white outfits and must wear masks. They had to throw them off at midnight. The party became the main social event of the year.

Harris Reid, in turn, began his collaboration with Nina Ricci and began to work a lot with monochrome. So it was to him that Collins and "Emily in Paris" costumer Marilyn Fetoussi turned when they needed an image for a ball scene. "They both gave me the challenge to make a strong impression, to create something that felt like something iconic," the designer explained of the costume's intent. And capitalized on the idea of making a statement with the very architectural shapes in the look that the guests of the black and white ball resorted to.

Another inspiration for the costume was the image of Eliza Doolittle from the musical "My Fair Lady," played by actress Audrey Hepburn. "I knew we needed to bring drama with the use of a hat," Reed explained. And it was the hats that were a prominent accent in the costumes for the 1964 movie.

"It was great because it was really organic. I related to [Emily] in a lot of ways, being an American-British in Paris and constantly being someone who has big dreams and does things her own way," Reed summarized his work on the costume.

For her part, Collins published an Instagram post about the costume he created, and called it her favorite in season 4 of "Emily in Paris." "Every detail was so thoughtful, inspired and perfect for Emily," she wrote.
