The goalkeeper of the Ukrainian national football team won the Spanish championship for Real Madrid

Real Madrid became the Spanish football champion in the 2023/2024 season. The royal club won La Liga ahead of schedule after beating Cadiz 3-0 in the 34th round, while its main rival Barcelona lost to Girona 2-4 in a parallel match.

Commenting on this success, Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti praised the performance of Ukraine's goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

"Thibaut Courtois is very important to us. But we have Lunin, who had an impressive season. We are where we are only because of Lunin," Ancelotti said.

Lunin joined Real Madrid from Zorya in 2018. In 2019, he extended his contract until 2025, although the deal was not officially announced by the club.

He became Real Madrid's main goalkeeper without Courtois, who suffered knee ligament damage back in August.

Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga was loaned to Real Madrid last August, but the Spaniard was injured in November, which allowed Lunin to gain a foothold in the main team.

Courtois, 31, missed the entire season and needed another knee surgery in March when he regressed.

Lunin has played 29 matches in all competitions this season, making 10 appearances in La Liga and two in the Champions League.

As OBOZ.UA reported, this week Real Madrid drew away to Bayern Munich in the first semifinal of the Champions League. The match at the Allianz Arena ended with a score of 2:2, and Lunin conceded two goals in 4 minutes.
