American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has made history by becoming the first athlete to win 100 World Cup events. The 29-year-old champion celebrated her milestone on February 23 at the Sestriere, Italy, stage by winning the slalom event.

Shiffrin covered the distance in 1.50.33, leaving behind Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic (+0.61) and the American Paula Moltzan (+0.64). After the finish, she emphasized that she had to make every effort to win.

"Today a lot had to go well for me and not so well for some others. Camilla Rast was very fast in the first race, so I had to make a lot of right moves to overtake her. But, in the end, I did some things right," Shiffrin said, as quoted by Eurosport.

This victory further strengthened the American's status as the most successful skier in history. She has two Olympic golds, eight world titles and five World Cups in the overall standings. She has long surpassed the legendary Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Lindsey Vonn (82) in terms of the number of World Cup victories.

In January, Shiffrin returned to competition after suffering an injury on November 30 during a stage in Killington. However, this did not stop her from reaching the top of the world skiing again.
