The European Commission will inspect TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat: the reason is given

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the possible impact on users of the algorithms of TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat. The EC is concerned that fake news and content on these networks may promote self-harm.

According to the Commission, the investigation is being conducted under the EU Digital Services Act. Authorized representatives of TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat will have to answer the EC's questions about how their video recommendation algorithms work.

"Platforms should assess and appropriately mitigate the risks associated with their recommendation systems, including risks to users' mental health and the spread of harmful content," the EC noted.

This refers to content (including news) "related to the electoral process and civil discourse." Some questions concern the possible spread of illegal content, such as drug advertising, hate speech, etc.

The Commission is examining the functions of automatic video playback and infinite scrolling. The Commission is also interested in which companies use restrictions to protect minors and reduce the spread of harmful content.

YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok must provide the requested information by November 15. If these platforms fail to provide the required information or provide false information, they face fines under EU law.

In turn, Euronews notes that this inspection is only the first step towards a number of solutions other than fines. The outlet quotes an unnamed senior EC official as saying that "the investigation should be a wake-up call for the platforms in question" so that they change their behavior.

The publication also emphasizes that although Meta (the owner of Facebook and Instagram) is not covered by this request, the Commission has launched a separate investigation into the company. The EC is also already conducting similar investigations into Elon Musk's social network X and the Chinese service AliExpress.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Ukraine has decided to restrict the use of Telegram on the official devices of civil servants, military, security sector employees and critical infrastructure facilities. The only exceptions will be those for whom the use of this messenger is part of their official duties.

According to the survey, only 9% of Ukrainians support the ban on Telegram. 54% believe that it should not be completely blocked, but only a number of restrictions should be imposed (blocking certain channels, etc.). And only 26% believe that Telegram should not be controlled.
