The electric vehicle market has advanced so far in recent years that a seven-seater family car with an electric motor is no longer a surprise. Not so long ago, if you wanted a third row of seats in your family car, your options were limited to a rather small selection of gasoline or diesel SUVs and minivans, but those days are over.

Autocar has even compiled a top ten list of the best family electric cars. Due to their size, many of these models belong to the more expensive segment. But over time, prices in the segment will start to fall, so now is the time to start looking closely.

Kia EV9

This is an extremely practical electric car with a lot of interior space, good performance, a great combination of quality and luxury, and decent efficiency and range. The third-row seats are not as spacious as those in front, but they will certainly be very comfortable for children. In addition, there is a very decent luggage compartment.

Peugeot e-5008

This electric car is hardly the prettiest of Peugeot's rather aesthetically pleasing modern lineup, but it is one of the best cars to drive. The seven-seat e-5008 is equipped with a 73 kWh battery with a 500 km range, but there is also a more powerful version with a 96 kWh battery with a 660 km range. You can also choose between single-engine and twin-engine all-wheel drive units, offering 211 and 318 hp respectively. The model pleases with its versatility and technology.

Volkswagen ID Buzz

Reimagined for the electric era, the Volkswagen Type 2 camper van is a bit bigger and more expensive than some expected. But it's stylish and has a good range. For seven seats, you'll need the extended wheelbase version. And in the LWB version, the ID Buzz can also have a larger 86 kWh battery. The declared range offers up to 460 km of travel between recharges. The electric motor of the model has a capacity of 282 hp. The interior space of this van could be more comfortable, but its handling on the road is impressive.

Tesla Model X

The Model X is Tesla's largest and most expensive car, and it is also the leader among seven-seater electric vehicles, which has been around since 2017. It's an extremely powerful car that is also impressively fast and easy to drive. Not to mention the spacious interior that provides comfort for passengers. Although the Model X weighs as much as 2.5 tons, the powerful 611 horsepower powertrain still allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. Only a few large electric vehicles have since been able to match the performance of American supercars.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

The EQB is a well-packaged crossover with good levels of comfort and luxury. The sliding second row of seats also means that the legroom for passengers in either of the two rear rows can be changed at will. As is often the case with Mercedes electric models, the prices for this car seem high. In addition, the range of 320 km can be disappointing. In 2022, when this model was launched, these were decent figures, but now it is no longer the case. The same goes for the fast charging capability. Nevertheless, the EQB drives well, is quite pleasant to drive, and does have plenty of room for seven people.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

The rarest car on this list is the SUV version of the Mercedes EQS limousine. This is a comfortable electric car for long-distance driving. It manages to overcome them thanks to a combination of good powertrain efficiency and a huge battery. High performance is also part of the deal. The disadvantage is that the interior layout is not flexible enough. If you create a comfortable legroom in the second row, the third-row passengers will suffer. The floor of the model is also quite high in relation to the base of the seats, although this is not a problem for children.

Mercedes-Benz EQV

Mercedes' electric van is designed more for VIP transportation than family use, but it's worth considering too, as a recent redesign has updated the model's infotainment system to the same high standard as the passenger car lineup. The EQV is also comfortable and luxurious and offers truly enormous space for both passengers and luggage. The hidden strength of the EQV is its refinement and handling. It's a big car - the largest on this list - but it's very agile on the road and offers both driver and passengers excellent visibility.

Citroën ë-Berlingo

The popular Citroën Berlingo has recently undergone a major redesign, and the electric ë-Berlingo has received a little extra range, which has solved the model's obvious problem. The new 54 kWh battery is not too large by modern electric car standards. But for the tasks for which the ë-Berlingo is intended, the 320 km of the declared range, as Citroën hopes, should be enough. Otherwise, the Berlingo has the same huge interior space and versatility as before. It also pleases with its high ride quality.

Peugeot e-Rifter

Another "Frenchman" on the e-Rifter list is closely related to the ë-Berlingo, but inferior in ride quality. It also loses out to its cousin in terms of range, offering only 280 km of driving distance from charge to charge. Despite this, it is extremely roomy and versatile thanks to modular seats that can be folded individually or completely removed.

Volvo EX90 (announced model)

The EX90 is one of the most highly anticipated full-size electric SUVs. Indeed, it will be Volvo's flagship model when it goes on sale later this year. The price will be a bit steep. But you can expect luxurious manners on the road and an incredible interior.
