We usually associate vacations with summer, and traveling with a trip to the warm sea or green mountains. However, winter weather can also be a great travel companion if you go to explore the old cities of Europe.

Mild European winters are conducive to walking between architectural masterpieces. And in December, you can also enjoy Christmas entertainment and goodies at holiday markets. Travel of Path has collected four options in Europe that are worth traveling to this winter.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest sits on the picturesque banks of the Danube River. The monumental red dome of the Hungarian parliament is reflected in the swift waters of the historic river. Not only it, but there are many other architectural wonders. The city's numerous bell towers, Habsburg-era facades, and ornate bridges are actually most beautiful when covered in snow and dimly lit by the lanterns that line the wide, tram-lined boulevards.

Winters in Budapest are ideal for ice skating in a city park. You can choose an ice rink with a view of the fairy-tale Vaydahunyad Castle. But if you want to get warm, there are always thermal baths open for you.

Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech capital is a real gem, where you can admire the sights endlessly, regardless of the season. But Prague is especially beautiful in winter. Imagine the partially frozen Vltava River, a hundred snow-covered spires, and Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world, shrouded in cold fog. There are also atmospheric cobblestone streets and monumental baroque churches.

Yes, the local Christmas markets are not as famous as the German ones, but only here you can taste a real trdelnik – a tubular cake that can also be filled. And don't forget the spicy mulled wine. In winter, there are fewer tourists in Prague, which means it's more convenient and enjoyable to visit.

Rome, Italy

The Eternal City, the ancient capital of the world and the cradle of Western culture has recently become a magnet for tourist groups and Instagram users. They start gathering at the sights as early as 5 a.m. to take the perfect pictures. However, in winter, the influx of tourists is much smaller, and the queues to enter historical monuments are actually halved.

You don't necessarily need warm weather to enjoy the beauty of Rome. Especially when it comes to art galleries and archaeological sites such as the Colosseum and Vatican Museums. And the bar district of Trastevere will not cease to be a fun night out in the cold weather.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is beautiful at any time of the year, but in the summer you'll have to work up a sweat to see all the sights, as you'll often be walking uphill. It's not very pleasant to climb hills in the heat, is it? In winter, there is no such problem. Winters in Portugal are quite mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees Celsius during the day, which is ideal for sightseeing.

Whether it's a stroll through the vibrant Alfama, exploring the hidden corners of the Moorish fortress atop Lisbon's highest hill, or just eating pate de nata in Praça do Comércio, you don't need the ruthless summer sun to fall in love with the Portuguese capital.
