In the summer, houses in our cities look beautiful, as many people decorate their exteriors with indoor plants - growing flowering annuals on windowsills or taking their home pots outdoors. However, even in the winter months, your balcony can look luxurious if you choose the right plants.

The Interia Kobieta publication told us about five plants that remain green all year round and are not afraid of the cold. At the same time, they can be easily grown in a pot. A separate plus is that they often weave beautifully and can be used to perfectly decorate a full-height balcony.

Boxwood

This shrub is one of those plants that are used in gardens to create hedges. However, it thrives well in a pot and can decorate your balcony or terrace. Boxwood is easy to grow, and there are only a few rules to keep in mind. First, the plant should be placed in a bright, but not too sunny area of the balcony. Boxwood also grows in the shade, but in this case it does not grow very large. Water the potted plant moderately, as excess water can cause the bush to rot. And don't forget to prune the plant regularly to give it a beautiful shape. It is also worth keeping in mind that young boxwoods do not always withstand negative temperatures, so before frost, the pots with the plant should be wrapped with a cloth.

Cherry laurel

Different types of laurel are becoming increasingly popular in gardens because the plant looks great, grows quite large and does not require complicated care. Moreover, this shrub can be grown on a balcony or terrace. All you need to do is to place loose and permeable soil in a large pot with a mandatory drainage layer at the bottom - these are the conditions that laurel loves. It grows best in conditions of plenty of sun. The plant needs frequent watering and regular fertilization. If the bush has grown too large, simply cut off the excess.

English ivy

If your balcony is on the shady side, it doesn't mean that you won't be able to decorate it with an evergreen plant - these are the conditions that English ivy loves. This plant does not need a lot of sun or special conditions to quickly green this part of the house. It develops intensively and within a year you will have a lushly decorated balcony with greenery. Ivy can grow on the walls on its own, but it is better to control its growth. Let the plant climb the supports. Ivy only needs alkaline soil and moisture in summer. The plant is usually hardy, but it is better to insulate the pot with young ivy for the winter.

Periwinkle

Periwinkle is a modest plant that looks beautiful both in winter and summer. For most of the year, it is decorated with small, bright green leaves, but in May (and often in August), charming small purple flowers appear among them. Periwinkle is a climbing plant, meaning that its stems spread along the ground. However, it also looks great in hanging pots. If you want the periwinkle to feel at its best on your balcony, provide it with a bright location and sufficient humidity during drought.

Gaulteria

Compared to the other plants mentioned, gaulteria is quite modest in size. But it compensates for this with its appearance. In summer, it pleases with intense flowering (then it also has a distinctive smell), and in winter it produces small red fruits that usually last until April. Gaulteria is a relative of heather, and therefore needs similar conditions. All it needs is acidic soil and periodic watering to make it look great on the balcony.
