Test your mind: a super challenging math puzzle

ObozrevatelNews
Puzzle with numbers

A puzzle that stumps you: can you solve it? This task was aired on the Australian TV show "The 1% Club" and blew up the network with its complexity.

According to the Express, only 15% of the world's population will be able to find the correct answer. You too can try to test your math skills.

What is the essence of the puzzle?

The participants are offered the following task: "Frodo forgot the number of his hotel room. All he remembers is that there is at least one 9 in it. If the hotel has room numbers from 1 to 100, how many rooms can be suitable for Frodo?"

Why is this puzzle so difficult?

Many people try to solve this puzzle and make the mistake of thinking that the answer is just one number (e.g., 9). However, the task is to determine the total number of numbers that can fit the condition. Many people limit themselves to looking for a single number without considering the range of possible answers, forgetting about numbers from 90 to 99, in which the digit 9 appears several times.

What is the correct answer?

The show's host revealed that the correct answer was 19, meaning that Frodo could have lived in the numbers: 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, and any number from 90 to 99.

This puzzle went viral due to its simplicity of formulation and complexity of solution. It shows how easily our brains can be tempted to find simple solutions, even when the correct answer requires deeper analysis.
