The popular and extremely picturesque Greek island of Santorini is going through a hard time as countless tourists have turned the lives of its residents into hell. And they themselves gather there in such big crowds that one can not enjoy the vacation.

However, you can take gorgeous photos for Instagram not only in Santorini. According to the Express, guests of Greece often overlook the stunning island in the northern Aegean Sea in vain. It has all the same charms but does not yet suffer from overtourism. We are talking about Lemnos.

It is one of the largest islands in Greece - Lemnos stretches almost 300 km in length. However, despite its beautiful beaches and azure waters, it has not become a tourist magnet like Mykonos or Crete.

Lemnos has a permanent population of about 16,000 people and tourism has not yet become their main source of income, relying more on agriculture and fishing. Still, like the rest of Greece, the island is full of many architectural and historical monuments and can delight you with beautiful landscapes, warm sea and a unique Greek atmosphere.

To admire the ancient sights, it is worth visiting the ancient settlements of Poliochni, Ifestia, and Kaveria. Although the cultural treasures of Lemnos are not limited to them.

Lemnos is a volcanic island, although volcanoes are no longer active here. However, impressive evidence of the island's tumultuous geological history can be seen everywhere. For example, in the form of Cape Falaklo. And near the village of Propouli there are bizarre volcanic formations, which, according to researchers, arose from the "meeting" of hot rocks with sea water. Now the Faraklo Geological Park is located there.

The main city and port of Lemnos is the capital Myrina, located on the west coast. It boasts cozy stone cobblestone streets and impressive architecture. Not far away you will find the beautiful Myrina Castle, a fortification that has been preserved since Byzantine times, as well as the restrained in its beauty church of Agios Nikolaos. Of course, you can also enjoy a delicious meal at the excellent restaurant serving the freshest seafood.

Moudros is the second largest settlement located near the bay, which is considered one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the Aegean region. Lemnos is also known as a great place for fishing and kitesurfing. Tourists are also impressed by Pachies Ammoudies, a small desert in the northwestern part of the island. Known among the locals as "Thick Sands", this arid area covers seven hectares and is covered with golden dunes.

Another attraction is Keros Beach, which is called one of the best sandy stretches of the island. It is located in a calm, wide bay with a very shallow depth. It is safe to relax with children and nice to cool off after a day of exploring the ancient ruins.

There are convenient domestic flights from Athens, Thessaloniki, Ikaria, Chios, Lesvos, Rhodes and Samos toLemnos International Airport "Hephaestus". There are also year-round ferries from Athens/Piraeus, Lavrion and Kavala. In the same way, you can get here from the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos and others. However, you will have to spend several hours on the boat trip.
