We usually associate Greece with beautiful beaches and spectacular ancient ruins. However, there are also many places for winter vacations.

The Express magazine has named 8 locations that will give you snow-capped mountains, and cozy and endless green landscapes. Mainland Greece will become your favorite winter vacation destination.

Above, Epirus

The city of Zagori boasts spectacular views that rival any UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will find hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails that wind through ancient forests, past monasteries, and arched bridges. You can end your journey in the Vikos Gorge, officially the deepest gorge in the world. In villages such as Megalo Papigo, Monodendri (meaning "same tree") and Tsepelovo, boutique hotels, and traditional taverns have opened their doors, serving hearty pies, wild mushrooms, and local dairy products.

Arakhova, Mount Parnassus, Beotia

The attractive mountain town of Arachova is often referred to as the winter Mykonos because of its mountainous landscape and cosmopolitan flavor. Located just five miles from the UNESCO site of Delphi, Arachova is a great base from which to explore one of the most iconic sites of the ancient world. For skiing enthusiasts, the Parnassos Ski Center, Greece's largest and most modern ski resort, is just a 20-minute drive from the city. It offers slopes for all levels, incredible mountain views, and well-maintained facilities.

Florina and Nimfaio, Macedonia

Located in the north of Greece, the Florina region offers a tranquil winter vacation. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and pristine Prespes lakes, the city of the same name enchants visitors with its serene beauty and cultural depth. During the holiday season, the city is filled with twinkling lights and the aroma of wood smoke from chimneys wafting over the Sakulevas River. Located just a 2.5-hour train ride from Thessaloniki, Florina's must-see sites include the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Gallery, which showcase the city's vibrant creative spirit.

Kalavryta, Peloponnese

Located at the foot of Mount Helmos in the northern Peloponnese, Kalavryta combines natural beauty, history, and winter sports. And all this is just a 2.5-hour drive from Athens. The ski center of Kalavryta, located at an altitude of 2340 meters, offers slopes for all skill levels, magnificent views, and modern facilities. Those who are not interested in winter sports will enjoy the historic Holy Monastery of Agia Laura, where the Greek War of Independence began. The Cave of Lakes with its cascading pools is also nearby, and there are streams in the forests of Planitero. And be sure to try the hearty Peloponnesian cuisine, such as stewed lamb and sweet jams.

Kastoria, Macedonia

Situated on the shores of Lake Orestiada and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Kastoria is a charming winter destination in northern Greece that combines natural beauty and cultural richness. In the historical districts of Doltso and Apozari, you can see snow-covered stone mansions and more than 50 Byzantine churches with stunning frescoes scattered along the winding cobblestone streets. Lake Orestiada itself is ideal for walking or boating, and the nearby Gramos and Vitsi mountains offer skiing, hiking, and forest exploration.

Metsovo, Epirus

Metzovo is a charming mountain town nestled on the slopes of Mount Pindos, featuring snow-covered houses, cobblestone streets, and views of snow-capped peaks. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Anilio and Karakoli ski centers are nearby, offering beginner slopes as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing options. Metzovo delights culture lovers and foodies. Try its famous smoked cheeses, Metzovone and Metzovela, or sip Katogi Averoff wine from its famous mountain winery.

Pylion, Southeastern Thessaly

Known as the "Mountain of the Centaurs" in Greek mythology, Pylion is a stunning winter vacation destination in Southeastern Thessaly. This picturesque peninsula combines cozy villages, dense forests, and a breathtaking coastline, making it magical all year round. But it becomes especially attractive in winter. It is the villages of Pylion that are its main gems, including Portaria with its cobblestone streets and boutique hotels, as well as Milies and Tsagarada with their historic squares and snow-covered plane trees.

Karpenission and Megalo Horio, Evrytania, Western Thessaly

Nestled in the rugged mountains of Euretania, Karpenission and its surrounding villages are often referred to as "Little Switzerland" and it's easy to see why. With alpine landscapes, dense forests, and pristine rivers, this region is ideal for tranquil solitude, adventure, and authentic mountain living. Megalo Horio enchants with stone houses, cobblestone streets, and stunning views of the Karpenisiotis River Valley, and skiers can ski on the slopes of the Velouchi ski center or hike along trails through gorges and spruce forests.
