Snake bites tourist after crawling under his T-shirt in France
A tourist is in critical condition after being bitten by a snake that crawled under his T-shirt while he was taking a nap on the street in southwestern France. During a walk with his family, the 49-year-old man decided to rest on the grass near Lesquin, Béarn, a popular destination for tourists.
While he was sleeping, a snake crawled under his T-shirt, possibly seeking shelter from the sun. It then bit him, causing the victim to go into anaphylactic shock as he was severely allergic to snake venom. This was reported by Connexion France.
According to available information, he probably moved, which may have scared the reptile. Emergency services called to the scene had to stabilize the man's condition before transporting him to a hospital in Pau by helicopter. His condition is currently unknown.
Rescuers believe that the man was bitten by an asp viper, which is common in the region. This snake is usually shy and runs away from most movements, sounds or vibrations, especially those caused by humans. Viper bites can be fatal: about 4% of cases end in death if help is not provided in time. About a thousand complaints about snakebites are registered in France every year, and it is tourists that are most often bitten.
